MilIt's been about 6 weeks since we started our serious potty training efforts with Philip and I think it's safe to call him good and potty trained now! He rarely has accidents at home and we are able to go out in public without the protection of a pull-up. It's wonderful to only be changing one child's diapers during the day! He still doesn't have nighttime awareness yet but it's a little early for that anyway.
This has been my greatest parenting achievement so far. LOL. I was so afraid of potty training, probably since Philip was born, and I have to say, it was much easier than I ever thought it would be. I think it helped a lot that we waited til he showed signs of interest instead of pushing it on him when we were ready and not when he was ready. He's just been great. Now that he's potty trained, we have the green light for preschool in the fall. Hooray!
Congrats!! This is huge! I know how you feel...I am petrified of potty training...so help me :) How did you know he was ready? How did you actually go about training? I'm hoping that we can get Audrey potty trained this summer!
ReplyDeleteWe started back in March. I initially just put him on the potty in front of the tv with salty snacks and a lot of liquids. Nothing! Than a couple of months later we tried again, this time I used my friend's tip of keeping him bottomless. I let him run around and play without his diaper on. He peed once while playing and it really freaked him out! After that it just kind of clicked and he was more receptive to going on the potty and would run over to it when he had to go (we kept him bottomless at home for a while. Getting him to the point where he'd not go in his underwear took a little longer). It's not much help to say, but I really do believe that if it's not clicking, they're just not there yet> It seems like once they're ready, they're on board! We didn't have to use bribes or rewards, either! So in March he was exactly two and a half... he's two and nine months now and I think he really just needed a little more time. One thing I do recommend though is sticking with cloth underwear or training pants at home and saving the pull-ups for when you're out. I think in the beginning the pull-ups are too much like a diaper for them to tell the difference. I bet Audrey will be ready by summertime. Girls are supposed to be ready sooner and easier, to train too! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks!! I've heard the bottomless method is the way to go. I'm so happy for you, Philip is so smart!
ReplyDeleteYay for Philip! This is huge milestone for him! I think Lucas is ready to give it a try. We tried back in January (because I desperately wanted him out of diapers before the baby came) and neither of us were ready! Now that we are home for the summer, I have the time to be with him at home for long stretches and he is definitely exhibiting some readiness signals. Wish us luck! :)
